mechanical breadth

The mechanical breadth analyzes the cooling load in the lobby, a three-level space with two levels of balconies and southern-facing curtain wall.  The study analyzes the effects of passive systems, such as internal shading and glass type.

acoustical breadth

The acoustical breadth is a reverberation time study in Founders Room, a gathering space and conference room.  It analyses three custom ceilings structures, developed in schematic design, that integrate acoustical and lighting properties.  A final design ceiling design, and other material changes, were determined based on reverberation calculations.

electrical depth

The electrical depth focuses on Southern California Edison’s time-of-use utility rate schedule that has its highest charge, or on-peak hours, when demand is the largest, during summer afternoons.  Using and scaling real energy consumption data from the Theatre Building on Penn State’s campus, an in-depth study was conducted to find an average daily energy profile curve for each month.  Using this information to find total energy consumption during on-peak hours,  an analysis was conducted to size a photovoltaic array in order to eliminate or reduce this load, consequently lowering the cost of the electricity bill.  See Tech Report 2.

lighting depth

The lighting depth is a complete redesign of lighting in the following four spaces: the façade and arts plaza, the lobby, the auditorium, and Founders Room.  The report documents the conceptual phase to final documentation, using the 10th edition of IES’s The Lighting Handbook and the 2016 edition of California’s Title 24 for target illuminance levels, uniformity, and lighting power density criteria. See Tech Reports 1, 3, and 4A.
